THE HEART OF FIRE   by   Joan Pancoe

“Learn the art of taking your stand on the Truth within. When you live in this Truth, the result is a fusion of the mind and the heart and the end of all fears and sorrows. It is not a dry attainment of mere power or intellectual knowledge.  A love which is illumined by the intuitive wisdom of the spirit will bless your life with ever-renewing fulfillment and never-ending sweetness.”  Meher Baba

Dear Friend,

So many of you have lost loved ones in the past year and asked me to specifically address this topic from a spiritual perspective—so here goes.

Firstly, I did some research online and discovered that, as of this year, there are over seven billion souls incarnate on the planet and this figure will exceed eight billion by 2024.  In the last year there were 130 million births and over 50 million deaths, which translate to approximately four births per minute and under two deaths.

For a real-time view of these facts—which is quite mind-blowing to witness—please check out this website:  REAL-TIME Births and Deaths

As we get older, all of us—sooner or later—get to experience the reality that more and more of our friends and family are no longer physically present in our lives.  Whenever I hear about the untimely loss of loved ones, it always reminds me of one of the most famous stories of the Buddha:

After losing her only child, Kisa Gotami became desperate and asked if anyone can help her. Her sorrow was so great that many thought she had already lost her mind. An old man told her to seek out the Buddha.

Buddha told her that before he could bring the child back to life, she should find white mustard seeds from a family where no one had died. She desperately went from house to house, but to her disappointment, she could not find one house that had not suffered the death of a family member.

Finally the realization struck her that there is no house free from mortality. She returned to the Buddha, who comforted her and preached this truth:

“Though one should live a hundred years
without seeing the Deathless State,
yet better indeed, is a single day’s life
of one who sees the Deathless State.”

. . . And she became enlightened.

Knowing this truth, that no one is free from mortality, makes it ever more important, not just to appreciate how precious and poignant it is to be fully present in each and every moment with those we cherish, but to remember:

I. To always maintain the witnessing perspective, as we are powerless over our loved ones’ karma playing out—and therefore to never take anything personally.

II. The deepest secret of Tantra:  Accept everything just as it is in the moment.  Resistance creates suffering.

III. The Flow of Life is not under our control; our true power lies in how we choose to respond and move with it.

IV. If we go for the healing and growth in any situation and simultaneously enjoy the ride, we’ll have no regrets later.

Or, as the great Indian saint Ramana Maharshi said, when he was dying, and his devotees begged him, “Please don’t leave us:”  “Don’t be silly, where can I go.”

There are two ways of relating to the rollercoaster of life and death:  It’s a double-edge sword of either fear or excitement.  Both make us feel really alive, but which brings us more joy?

If we can witness events as they unfold—no matter how tumultuous—and stay calm, balanced and compassionate at our core of Being, we’ll get to experience all the sweetness of life (and death) as an exhilarating adventure in consciousness, like tasting honey off the razor’s edge.

Besides, we’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose by raising our view to the timeless perspective of the Soul while in the Earth Game.  As, all rollercoaster rides, no matter how circuitous and death-defying, ultimately lead to the same destination:  We get to drop our bodies without losing our Higher Minds.  And, not only is physical death absolutely safe, it’s also the only thing in life that’s absolutely certain. That being said, why waste precious time worrying about the inevitable, when we can fully savor each moment’s potential for expanding our awareness?

On a personal note, as many of you may know, (especially if you’ve read my memoir, COSMIC SUGAR), my soulmate and psychic partner, the healer Jim Rush, dropped his body after a prolonged illness on his 60th birthday in 1997 after twenty-seven magical and wondrous years together— in which we got to play out a very full range of karmic roles.   And while it took me over a year to stop missing the comfort of his physical presence, I have to tell you that his soul and our heart-connection are ever-present.

I know, I know, it may be easier for me to say this because, as a trance channel, Jim is always available for comment, (although it is a long-distance call now:)).  But I can assure you that direct contact with our loved ones in other dimensions is available to each of us—if we are open to communicating with them through our inner receptivity and the dream state.  No mediums or psychics required!

In the first year after his passing, Jim took me on a trip, in a waking dream, to some of the higher-frequency dimensions where he plays—and all I can say is:  “What a Technicolor adventure we’re in for!  I call it “unrelenting spaciousness.”  It is, without doubt, what I had always been seeking—and, simultaneously, overwhelmingly terrifying—but in a good way, of course, as it blew the mind’s circuits wide open.  No hallucinogens required—in fact, this experience was waaay beyond any trip I’d ever been on.

After this last big adventure in other dimensions, Jim told me, “Remember this trip, Sweets, because I won’t be taking you on any more for a while.”  He knew that if I spent too much time playing in higher planes of consciousness with him, I would enjoy it so much that it would distract me from the work and play I still have left to do to fulfill my soul assignment for this incarnation.

This year, my personal channeled readings have reminded me that I am always “at mid-point”  in the beginningless and endless arising of form out of formlessness—like a wave of consciousness within the cosmic ocean.  This allows me to maintain a veeery long-range perspective on the whole Earth Game.  In fact, one of my favorite meditations is to witness all souls’ karmic wheels spinning round and round infinitely like a huge cosmic amusement park ride.  For more on this view of divine play see:  LEELA and a related article:

“If This Were Your Last Incarnation . . . What Would You Do?”

It’s also helpful to remember the many paradoxes contained within teaching stories about death in the ancient spiritual traditions if the East.  For example:

“A sage was asked, “How long have we been on this journey?”  He replied, “Imagine a mountain three miles high, three miles wide and three miles long.  Once every hundred years, a bird flies over the mountain, holding a silk scarf in its beak, which it brushes across the surface of the mountain. In the time it takes for the scarf to wear away the mountain, that’s how long we’ve been doing this.”

And yet at the same time, the Buddhists say:  “Imagine a giant tortoise swimming in a vast ocean.  Now imagine an oxen yoke floating somewhere else in this vast ocean.  Consider: What are the chances that the tortoise could possibly become harnessed within that oxen yoke. THAT possibility is as rare and precious an event as one human incarnation.”

Therefore, if we look at our relationships with others and with Life as the karmic curriculum we took incarnation for, then perhaps the death of loved ones is the most important grist for the mill of our awakening.  For, even if our karmic wheels do go round and round timelessly, each moment in an incarnation becomes ever more poignant when we witness death and formlessness as just the other side of the life of form we experience in this plane of duality.

The Tibetan Lama Anagarika Govinda said:

“There is not one person, indeed not one living being, who has not returned from death.  In fact, we have all died many deaths before we came into this incarnation.  And what we call birth is merely the reverse side of death.  It’s much more astonishing that not everybody remembers his or her previous death, but likewise, not everyone remembers their birth—and yet they do not doubt they were born.”

If you would like to explore your past lives, soul assignment and all your most pertinent births and deaths, please contact me to discuss having a soul reading and/or reactivating your karmic memories viscerally through past-life regression therapy.  (In NYC only)

For long-distance clients, I now offer mini-soul readings over the phone (mp3 included). For more detailed info, please see: SERVICES

In closing, it’s important to keep in mind that longing for our loved ones in other dimensions before it’s our time to dwell there is wasting the opportunities available for us in this life.  We’re not here to distract ourselves by checking-out or leaving our bodies—but rather to work on opening ourselves up to experiencing these higher frequencies while being fully embodied.  In other words, we’re here to learn how to be in heaven all the time—as we simultaneously honor our humanness by feeling happy AND sad as our new normal.

So, let’s celebrate this beautiful Spring—always at mid-point in our karmic dance—by making the absolute most of our paradise here on Earth as we cultivate a taste for bittersweet, while—on the other side—our loved ones laugh and sing and play . . . and wait for us . . . in perfect Time.

In the Garden by the River   by   Joan Pancoe

“Empty your mind of all thoughts.  Let your heart be at peace.  Each separate being in the universe returns to the common source.  Returning to the source is serenity.  If you don’t realize the source, you stumble in confusion and sorrow.  When you realize where you came from, you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, dignified as a king.  Immersed in the wonder of the Tao, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready.  Lao Tzu

PS Jupiter in Leo stations direct on April 8th, so it’s full speed ahead on projects in which we are the star—like our personal realities, for example.  Added to this, we get a big booster shot of energy to get moving with the New Moon in kick-starter Aries on April 18th. Then, on August 11th as the Great Benefic moves into punctilious Virgo, still in forward motion through January 7th, 2016, we’ll have the opportunity to fine-tune all our productions.  For more on this:

Also, transformational Pluto goes retrograde from April 16th through September 25th in structure-ruling Capricorn, indication that the death-and-rebirth cycles we’ve been witnessing accelerating on the world stage will be switching to a decidedly internal focus.  So get ready to witness parts of your identity or ego-structure that no longer serve you fall away, as well as any external structures or circumstances that supported these outmoded parts of self.  Haven’t you noticed this happening already?
